I remember reading some reports years ago that in essence that SNELL were harder and if one came off at say 140MPH would not crack as easily as DOT. But if one came off at street speeds the softer DOT would crumple a little and cushion the head better than a rigid SNELL. So much would depend on the speed one rides at.
