Great Roads - Utah Highway 12

Utah Highway 12 is one of the greatest touring roads to ride. The scenery is unlike anything else in the country.
The photos below were taken while riding south towards the west coast in August of 2017. This is just 15 miles of it in both
directions. Once in light rain, the other in sunshine further below.

A snippet from the Roadside Geology of Utah by Halka Chronic.

Observe the red-brown Triassic mudstone and siltstone, some of it decoratively marked with 230 million year old ripple marks.
Jurassic Navajo sandstone is faulted upward above these red rocks and appears as sculptured hills. Patterns of cross bedding
in the Navajo sandstone intersect evenly spaced joints; rills eroded along the joints give this rock a checkerboard appearance.

The following photos were taken on the same 15 mile stretch, but headed north in September of 2017.

Gorgeous photos!

Utah does have some amazing roads. Just north of Moab there is a stretch on highway 128 that runs along the Colorado River that is quite beautiful. I love riding my dirt bike out there. It is like riding on Mars

Amazing photos, John. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome road. In addition to the red stone and amazing rock formations, part of it runs through pine forests over 9000'. Definitely a winner.

You bet!

Yeah, I love Boulder mountain. It looks like a great place to hike and camp. The property prices in that general area are not too bad either.
