Whether he took them or not, he was there and people like him are responsible for so many fabulous images of the events of those days. Glad you shared them!

Oh! Are there any notes on the backs of the pics?

Here is my father somewhere in Asia after the war. He was too young to serve in WWII, but joined the Navy shortly after the war ended. He was on a destroyer that was an observer ship for one of the Bikini Atoll H bomb tests. I'm guessing it was in the late '40's or very early '50's. I don't know any of the history of his time in the Navy, because he died of cancer when I was five years old. It would be interesting to find out the cancer rates of the sailors that were on those ships.

I love this picture of my dad, because it's such a classic shot, with the rickshaw being pulled by the coolie. Plus my dad looks so jaunty!

My father was in the Navy guarding Alamagordo which they tested at as well. He also died of cancer. This was in the fifties as well. (time he served) I think youd be shocked at how many died after the fact.

Great pic. Backstory tells how they were normal happy people who served without hesitation.

I thought of that, too -- nothing on the back of the prints.

Great photos, guys!

This is my dad's dad, Willis Crenshaw. He never saw actual combat, but went to California during WWII to train to be a tail gunner. While he was waiting to go to the Pacific, we dropped the bomb. So he got to come home, make my dad, and here I am. It's odd to think if we hadn't dropped the bomb, I may not be here.

I think that if we hadn't, a whole lot of people in the Western world wouldn't have existed, regardless of the final outcome.

Re: cancer rates for observers, a short while back I was watching something that discussed that at length and the numbers are staggering, but never acknowledged by the government iirc. It was in conjunction with the impact on the locals that were in some cases relocated nearby directly in the path of the fallout. For some testing in Russia, it's suggested locals were deliberately not relocated in order to understand the potential impact of an attack.
