08 engine swap into a 09 model

Hoping someone has some insight on this. We are attempting to swap out my high mileage 09 motor from a 08 model year.

Bike is getting spark and fuel, but we can only get it to sputter. My buddy changed out all the sensors from the 08 motor with mine off the 09 and got the same result. He double checked the timing marks, and cross referenced the cam sensor and said both model years have the same #. Has anyone had any issues swapping out a gen 2?

Not sure if we have a bad connection with one of the wires, or perhaps the ECU isn't compatible with one of the sensors and causing a "NO START" condition.

Thanks for reading!

David

I would think it would be a simple bolt in deal. They’re the same engine, computer, etc. I would lean towards a missed connection somewhere. Or depending on length of time the engine sit clogged injectors.

Spray starting fluid, and see if it does more than sputter. If it runs then it’s a fueling issue. What about a kinked fuel line under tank? They’re notorious for getting kinked if you don’t pay attention and just let the tank straight down.

The engines and everything associated with them, should be a straight swap. Was there anything wrong with your higher mileage motor, or just looking to get a younger one in there? Plenty of Gen2 owners with over 100k miles with no issues.

Go through the diagnostic mode
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/76....html?page=366

Check that all the sensor voltages are within range, and you can actuate the ignition coils and fuel injectors with the run stop switch as specified in the service manual.

Just go over it all with a fine tooth comb and make sure you didn't miss anything obvious, also check the codes.

Didn't think there was a problem with the swap! Going through the electrical now making sure we didn't miss something or a wire was damaged upon removal. Bike needed a valve job, so I decided to just swap it out. It has a lot of track miles on her and that helped with the decision to just get something with less miles. Bike never had a single issue from the day I rode it off the dealers lot!

Confused.. you already did the swap and it's not starting?

Have you checked the fuel pump/pressure? Unlikely if it wasn't changed with the swap.

Yes, the motor has been installed. We're going through it now and checking, and I'm assuming it has to be something simple and we just missed something.

Water in gas? Maybe all ignition coils went bad simultaneously

Follow up: Bike up and running perfect. My buddy didn't have the service manual, and routed the coil harness up the wrong side of bike. firing order was completely off. Took less than an hour to isolate the issue and change things around.

Doh!

At least it was something simple. Keep that link for the service manual handy, good to have every now and then. One of these days I’ll print it out off that page.

Good that it’s back running, now you get to keep enjoying it
