Gravityfiend, sorry to be unclear. To rephrase, I can see how the FZ1 is a low volume model and individual units sitting for a long time could become burdensome to a dealer. But on the corporate level, continued sale of the bike in the US must be somewhat profitable, right? In contrast, the SV1000 naked (another low volume, limited audience kind of bike) ceased being sold here after 2003. Did the profit/cost balance just not add up for Suzuki? Are there other factors in that kind of decision? I'm curious about the SV1000 in particular because it shared all its parts with other models still in production (so those support costs should be low) but was still discontinued. Was it simply too much of a loser on the sales floor? In your opinion how close, or not, is the FZ1 to a similar fate?

Thanks,
swerverite

Now I understand

Retail pricing on a new model is set based on projected sales numbers. Return on investment is calculated once x number of units have been sold. Any units sold past this point are profit minus cost of production, shipping, warehousing and distribution. The production tooling costs are paid for and R&D $'s are recovered.

Power plants represent the biggest investment in R&D & tooling to an OE. The 1000 v twin zuke power plant has been around awhile and has been shared with a few models. The 1000S is still offered even though the naked model has been dropped. Not much difference in them except for the fairing. It outsold the one you were lusting after and OE's hate non currents at least as much as the dealers. Thus, no more naked 1000's. I think the FZ looks better naked too, but judging from the response some members have had to other's nudified FZ's, it wouldn't sell well in the US either. Even though it would be cheaper to produce this model, the R&D and tooling costs would likely go unrecouped. I think we will see the FZ1 unchanged until the profit is great enough and sales stable enough to warrant the costs associated with any upgrades. Dealers will still need to be pressured to stock them when and if this occurs.

Bikes with longer production runs like katanas, EX500's, KLR's, Concourse etc are proffit centers for the mfgs. While the dealers only take them under coercion, this is where the mfg's make the most $'s. It looks to me as if our favored ride is going to be in this catagory and will be around awhile. Its basic goodness has created a loyal base found amongst us here on this board. Don't look for any major changes for a few more model years though.

Just my humble opinion, you understand.

I think there is a chance the FZ1 could end up like the V Max by going unchanged its entire production life. Although it seems near impossible it can last as long as the 20 years the V Max has been around. They dont make as many as they used to but they all sell quickly.

I have a friend that's a sales rep for Honda motorcycles that I should ask about this. Obviously he won’t know anything about FZ1 prices but may shed some light on pricing of bikes. He sells to dealerships so would definitely know. I’ll ask him the next time I see him and will post back something.

My new '02 had been sitting on the dealer floor for over 2 years...I'm sure they did have a pizza party when I forked over the cash for that bitch!

I bought my 04 in april 04, so I doubt it was sitting on the floor much more than 3 months...

paid $7395

If there was a big markup, I might have been able to talk them down a bit, but then again, to me, the bottom line is.....

I don't regret it, it's worth what I paid. after all, I COULD have spent 20K on a Harley... but what would be the point in that? An R1 will cost quite a bit more, but I think I like the fizzer a lot more than I would an R1. Sounds like a Heck of a deal to me....

Ya, and how much is it out the door? I went to Chaparrel back in july 04 because they advertized a 03 bee for 6700.00, out the door was 9500.00, wtf. I told them I'd give them 8500.00 otd and they countered with 8900.00, I said later and went to John Burr in Fontana and road out with my silver 03 for 8400.00 otd.

hmmm my bike was supposed to be priced at 7399 and I ended up paying 10,068.78! According to my Purchase order they started me out at 8,698 which seems right if they were starting me out at msrp, but the bike was on sale. The stealer said that that missing 1200 dollars was from freight, destination and assembly charges. Guess guess they can charge whatever they want. The rep said that some dealers charge twice as much frieght, destination, and assembly.
