So now you have a frame with no VIN. Might be a bit of a problem. Depending on what state you live in.

Cracked frame on a 2007 fz1

I bought a Used 2007 Yamaha fz-1 on 02-16-2020 a couple days after I got home I realized that the right side of the frame was cracked. It’s at the shop now getting put back together. I had a welder fix it. He had to cut out the crack and re weld it and then added a 1/4” think sheet of aluminum on the outside of the frame. I’ll try to upload pictures.

How many miles on the bike? What is the welder charging you to repair?

The fact that he's welding plate over his weld makes me think he's not too confident in his work... If he properly dug out and rewelded it, there should be no need for the plate if he is a competent welder... That's a fix one would do on a trailer frame, not something seen on a motorcycle.
