Dashcam options

Thinking of a dash cam for my vehicles, would like something that has decent quality, records in a loop, I can wire it in so that I dont have to think about it until I smash a deer and want to go back and watch the play by play. Any suggestions?

No suggestions but I'm following. With my son driving now it has been a thought of mine, and to protect him too, he is very responsible but I know cops might tend to believe an adult over a high school sophomore.

I've been looking at the Garmins, just haven't taken the plunge yet. Decent reviews.

I did a ton of research and wanted something cheap and durable. These have served me for for last couple of years.

I just picked up 2 dash cams from Fry's Electronics for $30 each that have 1080p video, has a small 2 1/2 inch LCD screen, it has a suction cup that goes on the window and it has night vision. Problem is that it uses a class 4 or class 6 SD card which aren't easy to find and since the biggest one I could find was only 16GB I have to continuously reformat it because it fills up but it does have a 5 min loop recording as well a the battery doesn't last that long so it has to stay plugged in to the outlet all the time but does turn on and off with the car but for $30 it has a great picture.

The problem with the cheaper ones is that night footage is useless. You have to spend a little to get decent low-light resolution.

I have this one in my car and have been happy with it. Note that I bought from a different seller over a year ago, no longer listed with them, so I can't guarantee it's the exact same one. There are much cheaper ones that look the same, but are not the same quality.

I put this one in my daughter's car. Similar performance.

I bought the B-40 but haven't put it in my truck yet. I bought it because some duchebag in a big dodge truck hit me after I put my blinker on and started to change lanes. He sped up to close the gap went out to the left of me in the other lane up next to me then turned into me. My mirror put a nice dent in his pass door. No damage to my truck. Cop just walked away after checking out the damage. Guy was pissed but it was In my mind his fault. Anyway I figured it would be good to have a dash cam to record things like this to help save my butt just incase. Just too lazy to put it in. I have to get an SD card for it also. I did all the research and it seemed the best bang for the buck dash cam. Would like to get something similar for my helmet.

The B40 looks pretty slick. Will consider getting one of those. These cameras really can be lifesavers.

I handle auto accident cases for work, we get a word vs. word cases when you know that somebody is flat out lying all the time. I had one lady giving me the lie and I completely flattened her with video from our insured's car that showed he had the green light and proved beyond any doubt she was lying. My insured's truck broadsided her car and absent the video, the accident actually tilted her way as she had "control" of the intersection. She was very pushy and aggressive about her injuries and knowing all the while I had the video, I might have let her go on for a bit, so she could run up some chiropractic medical expenses, and then enjoyed denying her bodily injury claim a little too much after she had about $2,500 in chiro bills. Ya, I can be a dick too

It occurs to me, you could play the video back at the accident scene for the the cops in these cases too, ensuing that the responsible party gets their ticket. A lot of times witnesses do not want to get involved and do not come forward.

I have had one of these in my car for about a year now. Works great.

https://www.amazon.com/HP-Dashcam-f8...ds=hp+dash+cam

One thing about mounting any of these, the ideal spot to mount them is high on the windshield, right in front of the mirror. This gives the best POV and keeps the camera unobtrusive and unnoticeable. Unfortunately, the suction cup won't stick well to the black dots on the windshield that are in front of the mirror as they are just raised enough to break the suction. A bit of thin packing tape over the dots is a short term cure, but high temps will have the tape peeling off in no time. Naturally, I went with the nuclear option and wet sanded a small area of the offending black dots off. The camera stays stuck and has not needed to be attended to in any way in months.

Another useful suction cup tip - a bit of Carmex or other lip balm type stuff on the suction cup worked wonders in keeping it stuck.
