My Desktop PC Doesn't Think it has the Wireless anymore

Odd - a few days ago, possibly after a windows update, the internet was out on our PC. When I open up the the control panel, it lists only the Ethernet and Dial Up. Which is beyond odd - the PC is a few years old, but no, I don't have a dial up on it.

How do I get things back to where it can see the wireless?

Is the wireless controller integrated into the MB or was it an add on that you installed?

Have you tried a firmware update for the MB?

I didn't add it, so does that mean it's part of the mother board?

If so, how do I get mom to recognize it?

If your PC just went through an update cycle it’s very possible that the update doesn’t recognize some hardware in your PC.

You can update the firmware on your PC and it may fix your issue.

For instance if you have a Dell model 12345 you can go to their site and look for firmware updates on their customer support site. Usually companies keep an updated firmware database for their older hardware for a number of years.

You can use another pc to get the firmware updates and put them on a cd or thumb drive. Or you can use a cat 5 cable to give your pc access to the web.

Easiest solution,

Press windows button on keyboard, type settings, hit enter.
Go to update and security.
In the sidebar click recovery.
You should see a header, go back to a previous build, click get started.

Windows 10 updates are automatic and cannot easily be turned off, much to the frustration of many users. But this should fix your issue.

Believe this fix is only available for 10 days, after that windows deletes the previous build.

^^^ My laptop(Asus) was doing the same thing after an update. Took me about a year and a half to figure out what's going on. (It's not my main laptop)

What was going on, and how did you fix it?

I can't update the firmware because I can't even find the wireless adapter to ask for the update.......

I'm afraid the cost of labor to have someone sort this out will be about the same as just buying a new desktop at this point.

Besides, it is still freezing once a day - mostly when a video pops up. Everything locks, and have to power down to re boot.

Warren,

Do you have another pc in the house that can access the web?

Or

Is your pc close enough to your router/switch to hook a cat5 directly to it?? ( preferred method )

Windows 10?

Press the Windows key on your keyboard then type device manager. When that opens click the button that looks like a monitor with a magnifying glass over it. It will search for changes. Expand out the Network Adapters and see if you have anything wireless showing. If there isn't one, you may try the Action menu - Add legacy hardware wizard, where you can manually select the hardware if you know the manufacturer and model of your network adapter.

Certainly follow the advice given to try to add the device manually. It’s very possible that you can get the device added and updated that way.

I am a fan of making sure firmware is up to date as well. Since you are back on the web go to the PCs manufacturers website. Find “product support” “customer support” something along those lines. Most sites will identify your PCs model and Provide you with a list of updates for the hardware of your PC.

Problem solved! PC kept getting worse with hard drive errors, trouble booting up, file explorer crashing, etc. Given the PC is 5 years old, and how cheap things are these days, we just went out and got a generic I5 6 core with 500 gb solid state drive.

As my wife has a laptop from her school, I have a lap top from work, wife has a personal laptop, and I use my I Pad a lot, the desktop in our office at home is just for doing simple things like paying bills, main repository for all of our pictures, things like that.

Took 3 days to upload our files from carbonite!

Probably easiest solution.
Actually replacing computer hardware is usually easier than working on motorcycles. Unfortunately trouble shooting and activating varies a great deal.

A lot of things are supposed to be plug and play, windows installs a lot of common drivers.
Usually.
I try to build and fix computers a bit, can be easy or impossible. otoh I try for cheap which can get iffy.
