Google / Wikipedia sez it's a common Hooded Crow, found throughout Europe. Only my second trip over there, so like Tina says, it was new to me.

When I went to Quebec a couple of years ago, I was looking for spots to bird along the way. I noticed up by Sault St Marie there was a Black-billed Magpie stake out (usually a blind set up for a really rare bird that returns to the same area). I thought, what, those are all over? I looked up the species on allaboutbirds, the Cornell site, and turns out no, they are only out West. While I see them all the time, if you live in the south or east, you almost never will. The flip side of that is we don't get Northern Cardinals out here, and Blue Jays can be found but not in numbers like they are out east. It really makes you appreciate what you have sometimes to think about that others don't get to see it.

It is always interesting seeing the different birdlife when you are travelling. The variations on the species you have at home can be particularly interesting.

They do exist!

Wile, in the case of this little owl, we were at a local art foundation, a working ranch where they have artists in residence and an art gallery. We were meeting with the foundation, an Audubon person, and one of the artists. She's going to use one of my photos in one of her works, which is neat! Anyway, they knew where the nest was, so we went out to take a look. There are two owlets and at least one parent still around. We could see one parent and one owlet. These have branched, meaning they've left the nest and will start real flight soon. But usually it's just having my ears and eyes open.

Going through tons 'o pics I took while visiting my daughter & son-in-law last month. (side trip to Budapest ... very cool city).

House of Terror - Budapest - Now a museum containing exhibits related to the fascist and communist regimes in 20th-century Hungary and is also a memorial to the victims of these regimes, including those detained, interrogated, tortured or killed in the building. (internal photos weren't allowed ... the basement level was the holding/interrogation section ... quite chilling).

Vajdahunyad Castle - in City Park, Budapest
Built in 1896 for the Millennial Exhibition which celebrated the 1,000 years of Hungary since the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 895. The castle features copies of several landmark buildings from different parts the Kingdom of Hungary, especially the Hunyad Castle in Transylvania.
Originally, it was made from cardboard and wood, but it became so popular that it was rebuilt from stone and brick between 1904 and 1908. Today, it houses the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture, the biggest agricultural museum in Europe.

The facades of many buildings in Budapest just blew me away.

I really dug the light fixtures in front of the New York Cafe

I guess there actually was an 'Anonymous' ...

I wish we still built buildings with that kind of artistry.

Thanks for the comments. If an opportunity to see Budapest ever comes your way, do it. We were there only two days ... wish I could've stayed a week there!

Buda Castle

Chain Bridge

Hungarian Parliament

Fishermans Bastion

Liberty Bridge

Look around!
