It teaches you a lot of patience. Something that doesn't come naturally to me!

Me either. But I think I am going to start trying. I am in a pretty good area for migratory birds. I think I asked you this before, but forgot. What kind of lens are you using to zoom in on them so well?

Nikon P900 almost always on Auto Focus. No lenses other than what is part of the camera. Ed recommend it and I love it. It’s light and easy to carry and fast to use. Optical zoom is very clear. Digital gets a little fuzzy reall really far out but still good enough to ID.

I sort of figure it’s good practice for almost any other photography because you have to learn your subjects’ habits and movements.

That's right. Now I recall. Yeah, I think it is time I started putting more thought into this. Thanks!

Last night we went up onto Casper Mountain, hoping to band Northern Saw-whet Owls. To do this, we used an Audubon member's built by hand cabin, mist nets, and an owl call. No owls came to the nets, though a couple were heard. Still, being up on the mountain until 3 am, walks in the woods every 60 minutes, no wind, 38 degrees, wood fire in the cabin, snacks, and a small group of nice folks was quite wonderful.

The only reason this clearing is here is due to a fire that almost took the cabin.

Checking the nets

Getting some humidity going

That sounds like a really fun experience. How would you calm the owls down, with a hood of some kind?

Actually saw-whets are teeny weenie. Still fierce, but very calm birds in general. The organizer has PVC pipe cut into about 7" pieces, and then they are taped together with something to carry them. About six pieces of pipe. You just pop the bird into the pipe, and it keeps them calm, pop them out, then do the banding and release them lickety split. Since we didn't catch any, I didn't get to see it first hand, but he's done a live feed of it before. I can't find it saved though.

It looks something like this....
