Why would it clunk? Oring chains have grease inside, no need to lube the outsides, just to keep them clean. The wd40 is for cleaning not lubricating.

Luckily I was able to find a speed where the chain minimally slipped and rode it home and promptly replaced the whole chain drive.

It was this day forward that I decided that heavy weight transmission gear oil is the best chain lubricant. Might make a little mess, but I can get 30k out of a chain if I oil every 200 miles.
I found the opposite thing when I took apart my VStrom for a sprocket and chain change ;) The picture really doesn't do justice to how much goop was in the sprocket cover, all over the swingarm, the inside of the rear fender and anywhere else it could have gone.
