Are you kidding? I would love to have Rendon with everything else equal. It's tough to see good everyday players let down by bad pitching. But the Nationals won a World Series with an average at best bullpen and Rendon was a reason why.

Time will tell if it was worth it.

Regarding madbum, appears he wanted to go to AZ the whole time. Loves AZ, can have his horses there etc. He wasn’t looking for max $$$.

He's phenomenal. Incredible. The best 3rd baseman. Should have been world series MVP. But the Angels need pitching so badly, and were not in any need if infield starters or depth. They will not be able to compete unless they bring in an ace starter. Their pitching has decimated them several years in a row now.

It's hard to bring in an Ace starter and be guaranteed success. The Phillies last 4 attempts have been poor. All high dollar coming off strong seasons. Arietta has been adequate but not worth his contract. The others were complete busts.
Good scouting is second to home brewed pitchers. Finding that minor league guy in some other system ready to have a breakout year with the right coaching.

Agreed.

Cain Lincecum and Bum. All home grown in the SF system. All critical to the three titles.

Steve Carlton
Curt Schilling
Cole Hamels
and Aaron Nola all came up from Phillies system.
The Success of acquired Veteran starters Roy Hallady and Cliff Lee were the exceptions to the trend.

Steve Carlton came up through the Cardinals system, and was acquired by the Phillies in a trade for Rick Wise. One of the most one sided trades of all time.

I Didn't realize that. Yeah that wasn't the Babe Ruth trade, but close.

Yeah that is a serious penalty. It makes sense though the integrity of the game is fundamental to its success.

I expect all sports that have contracts with gaming corporations (MLB has MGM Resorts etc) to do some example making over these sorts of things over the next few years.

Actually, I take it back. After reading the document Manfred put out... this isn't much punishment at all. This is optics. Hey, it worked for a hot minute.

Jim Crane won. MLB is limited in how it can punish owners. As one writer put it:

Quote:
How many owners in baseball would trade $5 million, four high draft picks and the firing of their GM and manager in exchange for a World Series title?

Twenty-five? Twenty-eight? All 30? "I don't know that I would," one team president said, "but I don't know that I wouldn't." It was an honest answer. The decisions made in search of championships, in service of winning, are complicated. Right and wrong blur. It's why Manfred chafes at the complaints of owners. How many are being honest about what they'd do in that same scenario?

Whatever the answer, the remaining two mentions of Crane in Manfred's report do yeoman's work of clearing him. The first said it was "difficult to question" Crane giving Luhnow responsibility of baseball operations. The second stated, as fact, that Crane "was unaware of any of the violations of MLB rules by his club." And that was it. A thorough and impressive whitewashing. Tidy, clean, carefully orchestrated, meticulously calibrated. The Houston Astros, same as they ever were.

hmmm. ok but i still think it taints (taint!!) their win and it will forever be an *.

Also they ended up firing the GM and manager.

Is this really a “win” for the owner? Doesn’t feel like it to me.
They’re an embarrassment to the game imo.

And yes other teams have likely done something similar. Maybe this
penalty makes them rethink doing it again.
