My son also bought a Panasonic plasma as they were being discontinued. I have not seen it but he is extremely happy with it.
I have a 2 years old Samsung 65" LCD with LED backlight so I will not be in the market for a while, but I like it. As long as I am not exposed to 4K too much, I will not know what I am missing

LFE: There's a great site "cult of the infinitely baffled" that I lurked for a couple years before I committed to build mine. There's endless information on all things subwoofery and low frequency. I learned a great deal about room correction/tuning and all things audio related from the guys posting on that website. If you're interested in getting the best from your existing sound system, there's a lot of support information for the freeware REW program as well. If you're a bit OCD about these things as I am, you can make yourself nuts happily chasing audio nirvana for days on end - fairly warned )

Yes just a small fiber optic cable ~ 1/4" diameter or less. I was going to run it around the baseboards, but I would have had to get longer cables and I'm too cheap, so I just ran it under the carpet. It's been 5yrs of abuse walking on it and such with no problems - knock wood.

As to the cost, on the video side of it, you can pick up a used Sim2 HT300 E-link for a few hundred bucks or less. If you just want to mess around to see what it is, you can buy an HT300 without the remote processor for about $100 so you can decide if you like what it does before spending a few more dollars-which is what I did. You can use a white wall(free?) for a screen & it works quite well actually. If you want better performance you can buy vinyl sheet for use as a screen which is what we use. There's a number of Ebay vendors for it. I paid $90 for ours - new. There's also a special white reflective paint you could use which IIRC is slightly more expensive but will give you slightly more brightness at the expense of your black level. That's always the trade-off with projection screens. I'm not sure if you were asking about the surround sound system as well. If you want me to comment on the costs of that let me know & I'll post up - nbd. Honestly, people always hawk their shit as being the greatest thing since sliced bread and all that, but when reviewers talk about the image quality of DLP projectors being "jaw dropping" they're being literal and objective. Everyone who's seen our projector has been blown away including me - every time I fire it up. If you decide to go that route and have any questions, feel free to let me know. I'll help you as best I can.

So what did you end up getting Ed? Did you go with Dolby Atmos and, if so, how do you like it? I've got a very nice 7.1 system with Definitive Technology speakers and it sounds great but I'm afraid to listen to an Atmos system because I'm sure that I'll want one.

I ended up with a Sony 65" LCD TV, XBR-65X930E.

A Marantz receiver, SR5011, 100 watts per channel.

B&W 683 S2 main speakers.

B&W HTM62 S2 center channel speaker.

Four B&W M-1 mini theater speakers, two for rear and two high front for now. Will be sides later. On B&W stands. These are pretty good for little speakers.

Some DT subwoofer or other. Works fine.

I got the Apple TV 4K about a month or so ago and at this point I have everything working and hundreds of 4K/Dolby Vision or otherwise HDR movies. Yeah baby.

Oh yeah, I also bought an Oppo UDP-203 blu ray player and have bought some 4K/HDR discs. Also very nice.

It's great and looks incredible and sounds wonderful and I can Airplay to the receiver audio or even computer or device screens, video, whatever. There were bugs to fix along the way, the silliest was a well hidden setting on the TV for using faster HDMI signals. Something it should just do on its own. But once I found that poof, it's better than going to the theater and no assholes to deal with.

Oh, and Dolby Atmos is supported by that receiver.

It is nice but was really just a crazy stupid thing to do because that's what this year is all about.

I watch it every week but not every day. The kids nearly ignore it but that's fine because I don't have to compete. I got rid of DirecTV and only pay for HBO these days and of course our internet connections. I can't believe I paid all that money for what? Mostly dumbass sales crap and always the same repeated stupid commercials for things nobody needs.

The only channel I miss is TCM.

Nice system Ed! I have 2 Oppo Blu Ray players and they are excellent. You're right, home theaters now are as good as movie theaters and the only asshole is sitting in my chair.

I'm gonna have to go with the movie theater experience for the next Star Wars flick over a 65" screen.

In fact, that's about all I go to the theater for anymore. Is MUST SEE ON BIG SCREEN flicks. Last movies I've seen in theaters was Dunkirk, Rogue One, Mad Max and SW Episode 7.

That is a proper room of goodies Beet, the Sony 930 is a favorite amongst the pros and B&W speakers have few piers. That hidden HDR 4K section in the menu is default because not all media devices play nice.
HDR indeed, forget resolution specs, that is what people see and not just another industry buzz word. Movies now, mainstream programming to come. DTV or any other compressed pay service don't do that gear justice, stream old movies and Discovery HD and don't look back. DT Supercube might piss of the cat.

Those avatar boys look thrilled, oreos on sale tweak my blood sugar, I hope that's not a whole cart full of Winchester budget ammo....

Ammo wise we buy the good stuff at the range.

I almost bought a B&W sub but the DT was cheaper and smaller and sounded fine to me. I would get the 125 WPC Marantz or Denon were I to do it again vs. this one.

And I wanted to want an OLED but the Sony looked great to me right next to a $4500 LG so my sentimentality over Sony took over.
