Just Call Me Gramps (For the Third Time)

Hard to believe it's been over 5 years since I announced my first grandchild on this site, but last night my daughter-in-law gave birth to my third. My son and his wife were expecting their first child - due date February 25th, 2012. About 6:00 last night, just as I was getting home from work, the phone rang to tell me they had rushed her to the hospital. She had not felt the baby move in almost 24 hours, so she had the good sense to call her doctor who advised her to come to the hospital immediately. The doctor did not like what he saw on the ultrasound, and decided to do an emergency C-section. As the baby was only 27 weeks old, we were obviously all very concerned. Turns out the umbilical cord was not attached to the placenta properly and would have likely soon failed.

So far, the baby is doing fine, and so is my daughter-in-law. Meet Emmalyn. She weighed 2 lb. 2 oz., and is 15" long. Looks like she has my son's long hands and fingers!

If you're so inclined, please say a prayer for her good health and continued development. Thanks.

Thank you all for your kind wishes. They took Emmalyn off the respirator last night, and she is breathing nicely on her own. She'll be in the NICU for 10-11 weeks before she can go home, but things seem to be progressing nicely so far.

11/11 turned out to be an interesting month for us. I had surgery for skin cancer, had to put my mother in a nursing home, my wife's father is in the hospital with diverticulitis, and this scare with my son and his wife. Hopefully little Emmalyn will be the bright spot!

Vern, I used to work neonatal ICU and that is amazing at that weight! Wow! Thank you God.

Congratulations, It is amazing how fast babies make huge progress. Two of my kids were early (both six weeks) so saw lots of tiny babies when sitting in neonatal. Well Z Gramps keep the pictures coming.

Congratulations, Vern. I have 2 grand kids that came at the same time (twins). They were about 6 weeks early and only stayed in the hospital 12 days before coming home. I've noticed they can interfere with motorcycle riding.
