Counter-shaft area rattle

I found a puddle of oil so I decided to explore. Cleaned the front drive shaft area which was soaked and had been dripping the oil after removing the chain. I restarted the motor to see if it would leak and it would not I finally put it back together and will retest. There is a loud rattling when first or second is engaged (random sound) that I had always taken to be tooth and chain wear at the front sprocket and have replaced them numerous but it is inside the gearbox casing. What is it? I did a video but the sound is not apparent over motor noise. The chain has been thrown before I bought it as the case in front of the sprocket has been repaired. What is this disturbing rattle?

99% of the time the leak is from the shifter rod cover gasket. You will have a leak again.

You are probably correct about the leak. It's will take some time to discover. Thanks for the assistance. The internal noises really have me baffled.
