I was there last August. You can book a photo tour. They will run around mid day when the light is the best and you will be allowed tripods etc.
Amazing place!
Be warned that the tours will shut down if there are any significant rainfalls in the area.

I'd also like to check out "The Wave".

Edit: Reposted 2nd pic by mistake. Can't delete.

Here's the deal with the photo tours:
1. They cost more than the regular tours.
2. You have to pay $50 to the Navajo nation for a special photo pass that will allow you to use your photos commercially.
3. Photo tours start from one end of the canyon and the regular tours from the other--you will eventually run into other tours so you don't have an entire tour free from other tours.
4. Regular tours will not allow you a tripod, etc., but you can shoot as many photos as you wish without a permit. Most photos are taken pointing upwards anyway.

Bottom line; photo tour is a rip off. I got great pics without taking the photo tour.

Did you mean to respond to this old thread?

Either way, Jred and I rode through there last May. The tour was hokey, but I would not call it a ripoff. Pictures below...
