Wireless Apple CarPlay?

Looking for a new receiver for my car. I really like the idea of getting a unit that has Apple CarPlay, but really don't like the idea of having to connect it via a lightning cable every time to make it work.

I see that the new Apple OS gives you the option of connecting CarPlay via cable OR Bluetooth, but I can't seem to find any aftermarket receivers that have wireless CarPlay.

Any idea on who makes aftermarket wireless CarPlay units? Or is it just too new and they aren't out yet?

Heard on Mac Break Weekly podcast this week that Sony is making one.

Dunno anything other than that. Can't say I've ever heard anything really positive about car play though.

My 2013 accord has Bluetooth and has paired easily with my iPhones and instantly starts playing whatever I have playing.

Wireless is just starting to come out, BMW has it and VW is about to release. Aftermarket will follow.

It's the only way for me, as I have a Qi wireless charging pad semi-permanently plugged into my lightning connector.

OK then. Sounds like I'll need to wait 6 months or a year and see what aftermarket units pop up.

I was reading where they had thought CarPlay would require wi-fi, as Blue Tooth wouldn't be able to handle the amount of data (maps showing on the screen, etc.) But I guess they figured out a way to make Blue Tooth work. So I wonder if people with older CarPlay units that have Blue Tooth could be upgraded?

I'm liking the idea that you can hit a button on an aftermarket unit and bring up Siri. Then give voice commands to open Pandora, IHeart, your music on your phone, etc. If you ask for directions, the map pops up on the screen. You can also get an internet subscription to XM and play it through your I Phone via CarPlay.

It sounds like a nice system.

Any real users of CarPlay have any real world comments?

I have carplay (wired) in my new car and really like it. Some times for short trips I'll just use Bluetooth but most of the time it is worth plugging in the lightning cable. I like having the Apple Maps on the screen, I like it better than Honda's NAV, I like controling Siri through the car and being able to do texts that way. I get all the song and album info even from Amazon music displayed on the screen. Not sure why they wouldn't just do it Wi-Fi though, so many new cars have Wi-Fi anyway.

Can you get Waze or google maps to appear on the main screen? I have no use for apple maps or their nav.

What he said. Apple maps suck. I already do all my texting via Siri and the car's Bluetooth connection when I'm driving.

Can you pull up Siri using your current Blue Tooth connection, without Apple Car Play?

While tethered on the VDub, voice commands and google maps replace the VW navigation. Texting is better when unplugged, BT has better audio quality.
The next gen of connected car will blow you away, aftermarket will follow.

By pressing the home button for a second, yes.

I use it on the bike as well, thru my Sena headset.
