Thinking up upgrading Shoei RF900 to RF1100

Hi all, don't post as much as I used to and mostly lurk. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a new helmet, and the RF1100 has caught my eye.

Anyone out there with experience that can give a thumbs up/down on this product?

Likewise, any particular sites where prices are good? (saw that new enough has a new name, still good?)

Thanks!!!!

- Chris

Competition Accessories has RF-1100's on closeout this weekend. Great prices.

If Shoei's fit you, you won't go wrong with an RF-1100.

I have one. And an HJC. The shoei is better. I like it a lot.

If you're either a size small, XS, or XXL then Motorcycle Superstore has some killer prices.

I don't have one but seems every other rider has the RF1100. By far the most popular with the crowd I know so it must be doing something right.

I have one. Very comfortable. Lots of venting options, good aerodynamics. Replaced the cheek pads last winter with the 2 mm thicker option for a snugger fit.

Try one on before you by it. They're made for an oval shaped head. Not as oval as the Arai, and definitely not for a round head. Ear pockets are a little different from the RF1000. The RF1100 fits me well, RF1000 not so good, don't know about the RF900.

Cool, thanks for the tip as well! My Shoei X-11 is not about 10 years old - still looks new (I know that the EPS liner can deteriorate over time but I also think the "replace every 3/4/5 years is also marketing driven). New cheek pads, but the top pad is disintegrating.

While I don't want a $69 helmet protecting my brain, I don't think I'll be springing for a $600+ X-12. The RF1100 looks like it might be next on the list.

Right there with you man, can't even find top pads size large even if that was all I wanted to do. budget is tight right now, LOVE the X-11 and have worn Shoei's since the mid 80's, Simpson & Bell before that. I recall seeing killer deal on Bell stars recently

and have read and re-read the GT air thread, just don't think I want the flip down sun shade thingy even though I always wear sunglasses

While we're on the subject (sorry to thread-jack), has anyone had any experience with the Joe Rocket (made by HJC) carbon helmets?

I went from an RF1000 to the Qwest. The RF1000 fit me well after I changed the cheek pads to thinner ones. When it came time to replace my 5+ year old RF1000 I read the shape of the RF1100 was changed from the RF1000 but the Qwest was more similar, so that is what I went with. After I changed the cheek pads in the Qwest to thinner ones, I've found it to be similar in fit and performance to my old RF1000.

i've been lusting for one myself. especially with the closeout deals. the only thing that stops me is that I really love the flip down sun visor in my scorpion EXO. so handy. i don;t think i can live without that feature.

I went to the store to buy the Shoei. Came home with an Arai for not much more. Bottom line, it fit me better.

Yeah needed an upgrade quick update, I ended up getting the 1100 and tried it on: my noggin doesn't fit that narrow oval helmets that well! I've instead ordered a qwest helmet (rounder shape, similar features) and returned the 1100. I'll let you guys know how that one works out. The 1100 looked really really nice, and I wished it would have fit, but feel good about what's in the mail.

I bought an RF1100 at Competition Accessories on sale for something around $350 last year. Fit (for me), quality, and aerodynamics are very good, which makes it a keeper. And it's a bit quieter than the cheap Gmax that I had before. Overall, very happy. But, I like to ride with the shield cracked open in town for some air. That, and the chin vent both blow air STRAIGHT UP into my eyes, which of course I don't like. Overall a minor concern, but for the price any imperfections are a little irritating.

I also bought my RF-1100 through Comp Acc online for around $350. Was a killer deal for the helmet... but to tell you the truth, if I had paid anything more, I'd be dissapointed. The helmet is well maid, and fit and finish are great, including paint etc. But I don't find it to be very quiet, so have to wear ear plugs all the time anyway, and the vent system is very slippery and difficult to operate even with gloves off. I can't open or close them with gloves on to save my life... even when off the bike. There is just nothing to grab on to, I guess tabs would ruin the aerodynamics or something.

Plus, I do wish it had the drop down sun visor like the newer model.

Overall... for the price I paid, I'm reasonably happy. But if I had to buy it all over again, I'd probably look at some other... maybe even less expensive options, that still meet safety standards.

I recently found that Arai's long oval is my helmet. That comes with mixed emotions. I love the way it feels on my head but Arai lacks in features like the Shoei's. The drop down sun visor is just a necessity these days and the Neotec would have been my holy grail had it fit right. Wearing an Arai is like wearing a comfy helmet with 1950's styling.
