Mostly just east of there. Brownsville to east of padre island. There just wasn’t time to get there and everywhere else unfortunately.

Just stunning! I'm an engineer and I have exactly zero artist in me but I really appreciate beautiful art.

Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! Another bird...Sandhill Crane tracking Mallard flyover.

Red Crossbill - adult having lost a fair amount of its breeding plumage (hence the orange coloring)

And a juvenile. Crossbills will produce young in almost every season except late summer and fall, depending on pine seed crops.

Mama Great Horned Owl on the osprey nest. I'm watching this one, because when the little owls branch, they aren't in a tree to branch to.

Young Bald Eagle across from our house. We are almost on the creek, so we see a fair amount of them. Eagles winter up here in our neck of the woods. A few will nest here as well.

Franklin's Gull - it's nice, as most gulls, especially in years 1-3 look almost identical, so that birds are IDing them by minute details, to have a gull that you can ID on sight and that isn't a Ring-billed.

Osprey

Wow T, fabulous shots. Been reading over books. I find myself compelled by birds of prey. Osprey and Hawks are interesting as heck to me. The other side is, some of the other birds and the way they track and hunt. Heck, even the Hummingbird tracks and scents for food. (Obvious I know) Reckon its opened my eyes to something I never gave a thought to.

EDIT: Dont even get me started on owls..........

Raptors are what I consider great starter birds. They are big (easy to spot), arrogant (so often they won't fly off when you sit and watch them), and have great expressions. Owls are fun too, because 90% of them you more often luck into than you ever will just find out and about. Unless you know how to find them. For instance, Great Horned Owls mostly come out in crepuscular light (dawn and dusk). They will sit out a little more in the open and (I think) let their eyes adjust to the coming dark. Little birds, like Robins, are still out, and completely freak out when an owl is around. If you listen for a lot of Robins giving an alarm call, which is a repeated PEEP! often you can look to where they are grouping and find an owl in there. Any owl, but in my neck of the woods, mostly GHO.

This will happen with other owls and other birds, but not so obviously to most people. Other owls, like Snowy and Burrowing, are diurnal, so they hunt at both day and night. If you know where to find them, for instance, Burrowing Owls are usually found in prairie dog colonies, they can be easy to spot.

Other owls like Northern Saw-whet, Boreal, Eastern and Western Screech, you are almost going to need to have someone point them out or just completely luck into one and recognize it.

So keep yer eyes and ears open!

I love the lines and shadows on the dirt road picture.
The owl though, yeah, I’d have never seen it.
