For o-ring chains, I personally prefer to not use a brush on the roller faces, where the bristles might come in direct contact with the rubber o-rings. If I did use a brush there, it would have very soft bristles. On the side plates I don't think it matters, I've even used a wire brush at times there.

Everyone has their own opinion on chain maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication. I'm in the WD-40 only camp for cleaning and rust prevention. It works for me, even when the bike lived outside for a year and a half in the south Florida coastal humidity. Of course, there's so many ways to skin that cat. Lastly, I tend to keep the chain on the loose side of the slack limit.
