Shopping list!

Hey all, new to the group here! recently picked up my 2002 Fz1 for a sweeet deal ($700 for a bike that wouldn't stop flooding, just needed new float valve o-rings!)

Couple of things already checked off my list (Ivans jet kit, Yoshi slip on, heated grips, white plug-of-death upgrade) but I am searching for a few more things that will really bring it all home. If anyone has any info on were I can get any of the following, I would greatly appreciate it!

-Stock height handlebar risers (I currently have the factory lowered mounts and I am looking to bring the bars back up)

-Lower fearing/ "Belly Pan" (bike is liquid silver, but I can paint)

I also got a SW MOTECH top rack from the guy I bought the bike from along w/ a box of bolts. Is anyone here familiar with the installation of this version of top rack/ does anyone here have one mounted that can send a few pics?

Appreciate the help!

I would call Twisted Throttle to see if they can send you a pdf of the installation instructions for the rack. They advertise lifetime product support, so I wouldn't be surprised if they can help you on this. Worth a shot.

Rack "arms" just bolt in place of the grab handles, top plate bolts to the arms with spacers. The little rubber grommet things are pretty easy to tear...

Welcome! Cheap but substantial upgrades to stock bike that you don't have covered yet:

-Suspension upgrade. Start with Raven's fork mod and dogbone mod. Will cost you all of about $20 and makes a super difference with the bike. Front end will be more compliant yet have more weight on front wheel for much better handling. Rear end pogo will be severely reduced. Can't recommend this enough.
-Braided brake lines and sintered pads. Cheap mod that will pay you back in spades for better feel and shorter stops.
-Find every single bearing on the bike and clean/re-lube them. Will be a pain to get to them all but it is worth it and you won't have to do the job again for a very long time.
-Replace every ounce of fluid of any kind on the bike.
-When you have the carbs off, port match the carb boots to the intake manifold. There is a super nasty edge there that is very easy to mill off with a Dremel tool. Will be helpful to your engine for sure.
-I used Ivan's full kit which included modding the air box (costs nothing) and got great results. Of course, I also did more engine work - there is along thread here "Facts about mods as I know them" http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/forum/sho...ght=facts+mods
that Longeze started but chronicles my engine mods which put me at over 160hp at the crank for my Gen 1.
-Check the head bearings. Replace if necessary.

That's a great start. Have fun prepping your new ride!

Best,
Ron

Upgrades not previously included:
-Penske rear shock
-G.M.D. Computrack tuned front forks (new seals/ bushings)
-Stainless braided lines all around
-New pads/ fluids/ tires
-Carb boots port matched

Still to do:
-just kidding, that list is way too long

I do still need to sync the carbs, sounds like I do have one slightly off. I know Ivan loves running bikes rich with his kits, anyone have any input on leaning it out to clean up the low end a little?

My biggest thing I want to take care of right now is new throttle/ clutch cables, and raising the bars up. The bike has the factory lowered GYT-R risers, from what I know, these are 1" lower than standard height? I am having trouble finding a set of standard height risers that don't look all rusted and bent out of shape!

I'll have some pictures up as soon as possible!

Here are some places I found for body work for the Gen 1. I have not ordered them myself so I cant tell about the company or the quality.
