This is interesting and I'm glad I picked up on this thread. I've been using Bosch on the FZ for a while with the occasional Mobil 1. Last oil change with the Bosch gave me a small but regular drip from the o ring. I tried to work with it but finally installed another Bosch and have had no problems. Will be paying closer attention on the filter front going forward...

Best,

So I go to Wal-Mart last night, they have Rotella on sale, but as is typical they are totally sold out of gallons of T6. They had rearranged the whole oil and filter section, and changed the selection of filters. No more Purolator, they have Bosch, and the Supertech are back! A whole section of them.

They are different than the old ones, white, I found a different part number as a cross looking up my Acura (which uses the same filter as the FZ1 and FJR). I bought one, the picture makes it look almost flat but it is concave, the FZ should need an oil change in about a week or 2 so I'll probably try it there and see if it works.

Bought one of these last night. You never got back to us if these worked. I'll be putting oil in the bike tomorrow and confirming if it works or not. It is concave for sure

amazon:
Mahle OC575 $5.95+ free shipping no prime required (or benefits)
Most Mahle listing (are for BMW Motorcycles (USA website BMW only) , these cross reference to FZ1
Rotella t6 5-40 gallon $21.36 prime ..
fwiw
Delo 39146 400 LE 5-40 gallon synthetic $19.97 prime

Basically amazon items are usually in stock and delivered, Walmart seems (at least localy) to not have what i'm looking for more often than not.
Anyone tried Walmart on line to store for off shelf items?

So it is confirmed that the Supertech 9688 works on the Gen 1 FZ1. Just fitted mine at 15 ft lbs, ran it for 3 minutes no drip or leak. $2.50 and even RavenRider says these are great filters. For some reason, many of our cheapo store brand filters are getting this convex design, but ST 9688 still works and is flat design.

How about the relief valve in car vs motorcycle oil filters? there is a difference if a relief valve opens easily it will allow unfiltered oil to circulate & if it is stiff it will starve the engine of oil so unless I know these specs I'll stick with motorcycle specific oil filters & not look for a cheaper priced filter.

I remember a while ago reading about Purolator (Pureone) that its not recommended for motorcycles. so all this is for a few bucks saving that can be detrimental to the engine's life? NO thanks, I'll stick with the Yamaha filter or at least motorcycle specific filter

I wonder if the filter knows if it is on a motorcycle or a car? Mine just filters oil and doesn't complain and I have 60K miles.
Same type filter goes on my Celica GTS with a Yamaha engineered head that regularly revs to 8200-8300 rpms. That's a lot of pressure and more GPM through that filter than my FZ1 can make.

Oil in spec will not allow enough wear for there to be damage if the relief valve allows some back without filtering.

In 2017 oil and filters aren't rocket science. Dean uses the cheapest crap he can find. Literally. Has over 110K miles.

FWIW I put a HiFlo Filtro Racing filter on my SV650 trackbike. But that's because its a different thread pattern and I cant find cheap filters for the SV. The HiFlo cost me 9$.

Found this just surfing:kinda what I'm saying

Here's a cool 40$ kit for you motorcycle specific guys. https://www.amazon.com/MaximaHiflofi...ywords=HF303RC

Not bad actually. Only 17$ more than my Supertech/Fram Filter and Rotella T6

There are "oil guy" reference tests of oil filters, internal specs and quality.
When I had my 01 (02-07) I used the Purolator filters.
If they were compatible then I doubt internals have changed as they are still recommended for same cars. Distance from bulkhead to seal has changed and may leak now.

K&N and HyFlo are owned by the same company now, changes made. K&N has had problems on racetracks, and now recall on HyFlo.

Rumor is Chinese factories build filters to a price "tier" new owners lowered tier level.

Since a lot, maybe all of the car filters come from Chinese factories I am afraid "shorter"
bulkhead will find its way to all filters.

Mahle filters were from Stutgart but at least some are from Singapore now.
OC575 FITS Yamaha, Hondas, Triumphs, I've heard Victory and others

Phuck that noise. Yamaha OEM are easily available and $s difference is insignificant to find out the K&N is spewing oil all over the bike and the rear wheel.

HiFlo makes the filters for K&N. That's the common ground. The blown gaskets have not been reported with HiFlo

Duplicate.

P.S. I hope the 95% efficiency rating of the ST filter I put in doesn't blow my engine

I used the Supertech 9688 last time I did my oil change. I just picked up another one for my next oil change and it looks the same, concave so it'll fit.

The best part is that they're under $3, and can be bought at the same time as a cheap gallon of Rotella T4 (which by the way is now JASO MA compliant!)
