Fractured Lands
How the Arab World Came Apart
By Scott Anderson

Pretty interesting read about the Middle East coming apart after the 2003 Iraqi invasion and the Arab Spring as seen through the eyes of 6 different individuals from the areas in revolt. It's by the author who wrote Lawrence in Arabia.

About to start, "Republic of Spin", by David Greenburg. An inside history of the American Presidency.

Goes back a hundred years of american politics. Should be an informing read.

A Gentleman in Moscow - excellent read that kind of sticks with you like the good ones do.
If you are looking for action or romance this is not the book for you.

I think LT would like this one .

If you care about books and words -

mrs grommet is very involved in the publishing industry. She is the managing director for an organization that puts on contests which attempt to match prospective authors with literary agents. Their biggest contest is called Pitch Wars. It's going on right now. The submission window was last week, ending on the 6th of August.

It's a pretty cool event, which in the past couple of years has had a success rate of 50 - 55% of the authors who get in being matched up with an agent. If you know anything about this business, you know that it's very difficult to get an agent, so this is a good thing for the authors and for the agents.

So the contest is popular. This year there are just over 2900 applicants.

I get to help out on the technical side. I'm writing software for her to help organize all the data that comes in with the submissions.

One of the bits of data I'm collecting is the most popular words in the titles of the submitted manuscripts. The titles give an interesting view into what people are writing about. Here are the lists of most popular words, organized by age category, with the number of occurrences of the word in titles in that category:

Note: the following common words have been ommitted:
OF, AND, A, IN, TO, YOU, ME, ON, &, IS,
IT, AT, US, MY, FOR, WE, BY, I, BE, OUT,
-, THAT, THIS, WHEN, ARE, WHAT, FROM, WITH, NOT, AN,
HOW, AS, NO
Note: words occurring in titles less than 4 times are not included.

What does all this mean? For one thing, to me, it says that people get less happy as they get older. World summer secret blue magic boy other road dragon sounds like a lot more fun than One dark last blood city all lost love broken black book fire road.

Draw your own conclusions.

In the middle of, "Stalin and the Scientists", by Simon Ings.

Bit slow at times, but very interesting reading about the Soviet Union before and after, the revolution in 1917.

Just started "Blitzed", Drugs in the Third Reich, by Norman Ohler.

Did not realize, how much the "Wehrmacht" depended on Methamphetamine tablets, to run their assault, on France.

Interesting read.

I have been on a German soldier memoirs kick lately and none is better than this incredible book. The Eastern Front was where the war was won and lost and it was absolutely brutal.
Great read in the vein of All Quiet on the Western Front (another brillaint book)

Just finished "Chief Engineer", by Erica Wagner. The book is about Washington Roebling, the man who built the Brooklyn Bridge, connecting New York with Brooklyn. Very interesting read.

Am now on to "An American Sickness", by Dr. Elisabeth Rosenthal. Really explains how truly screwed up, our health care system is in this country. Well worth checking out. Some things in this book, will really shock you!

The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden. Mark Bowden

This paints a vivid and (likely) accurate picture of Al Qaeda, how it operates, and how the war against it was waged, with all of the necessary background. Covers political, tactical, and strategic aspects of the war in just enough detail. And a war it was. Or is.

Pretty disturbing, but also important to know I think. Mark Bowden keeps it interesting.

I'm a history buff. Just started, Fire in the minds of men - Origins of the revolutionary faith

a book about the spread of ideas written by James H. Billington, historian and Librarian of Congress. The book analyzes the ideas that inspired European revolutionary movements from the 1700s to the 1900s.
