So... the hiring manager called late this afternoon and said the HR people will call in a while with an offer. Next hurdle is if it a "for real" offer, but things are definitely moving in right direction.

Wife looking on line at houses already. Found a really nice one 4 hours away on some lake. Sure, I can commute...… LOL

Good luck with the offer. I'm pretty local to this and if you need any help, a guide, or entertainment... (just give a shout out)

Well, got a phone call with some verbal details on an offer yesterday. Will need to get more specifics with their HR on Thursday, but it looks like I'll be a Yankee with a U Haul headed to Atlanta area.

Probably start beginning of August.

I know you can't really get a feel for an area without being there and seeing houses, etc., but it looks doable on what I can do for salary, etc.

Given a 30 - 60 min commute, what areas surrounding Marietta should the wife be looking at on line?

Anything to keep away from? Watch outs? I assume heat pumps are common? Any area with odd local laws / taxes, etc.?

I'll give you an early, "Welcome to Georgia!", and well wishes for you're move. Hopefully they will treat you right on the offer, maybe even a relocation policy to help with that big expense.

We're on the other side, close to Lake Lanier, so not sure of the living/commuting situation there. Heat pumps are common here, but there's also A/C systems with furnaces. Just depends on the age of the home and what kind of heat one likes.

The best part is that you'll be not far from excellent riding. Congrats!

There are many great and many shitty areas, the quality of life to agony of commute ratio is going to be directly proportional to how much you spend. There are some really nice neighborhoods close to the Cumberland area - some of the most affluent in town - but there are also some "affordable" apartments/condos where I, personally, wouldn't care to visit, let alone live.

Commute - gunning around 1 hour. I've lived in Chicago. Not doing 2 hours one way again.

Not apartment or condo.

We'll have to see when we get there and can hook up with a relator.

Cumberland is easily accessible from Smyrna and Austell, These will be your cheaper neighborhoods with access to Cumberland taking just over 30 minutes off peak times and possibly an hour depending on how far off of the East West Connector you get. I lived for 12 years @ 1055 Whistle Dr, Austell GA.) But I got tired of the local traffic and moved to Hiram, GA. (now the traffic is pretty serious out here too,)

Just meant there's good and bad very close to there.

An hour? Good god.. I'd eat a bullet! Working from home for over 20 years has spoiled me, I guess..

All relative. I used to live in Chicago, with 1:40 one way - if you caught the express train. 2 hours if you drove.

I drive 40 min now.

Don't get me wrong, not looking for a long commute. Not doing Chicago again. But I can drive a bit if it means getting house wife likes, etc.

If you're happy with that, "the world is your oyster" - you could find a VERY nice home on decent property within an hour of Cumberland area.

A friend of mine works in Alpharetta - pretty much due North of Atlanta, kind of on the "outskirts" of where you'd start to see heavy traffic. He lives almost an hour North of there - literally in the North GA mountains. He and his wife wouldn't have it any other way...

So - I've landed here in GA! 3rd day on the job, and they seem to want me to keep coming back - so far so good LOL!

No bike - just the car for now and temp housing. Probably a few months before we can sell our current house, find a new house here and get moved - and bring the bike down.

Looking forward to some day figuring out where all of this great GA riding is!

Welcome!

There's no great riding here at all. Nothing but hillbillys, meth, and crappy potholed roads. Let us know when you're ready to ride.

Welcome. Look up Two Wheels of Suches, and head over for a burger if you get an afternoon off. You won't regret it, and it'll make you excited to get on the bike.

As well as possible after 3 days. I'll post up as I get settled more - a Yankee with a U Haul's perspective on moving to Atlanta.

Welcome!!! Now go get that motorcycle and bring it down here! Surely someone in ATL will foster it for you until you find permanent accommodations!
